Sensitive scalps often lead to so-called red scalp syndrome and scalp burnout. Complaints about sensitive scalps are a frequent problem in the practice and often pose a particular challenge for dermatologists. Patients with hair loss and alopecia (increased hair loss) in particular often complain of scalp problems, which must be taken into account in the treatment program for successful therapy. The main complaint is a sensitive scalp, which can be caused by various factors: Atopic skin disposition with a tendency to sebostasis, irritation and eczema, type IV sensitization to certain shampoo ingredients (e.g. cocamidopropyl betaine and preservatives), skin dryness in old age (age-related sebostasis), intensive chemical hair treatments and specific dermatological scalp diseases (e.g. seborrhoeic eczema, psoriasis and their therapy-related secondary conditions, primarily due to prolonged use of active ingredients containing corticosteroids.
